WRECK SMALL SPEAKERS ON EXPENSIVE STEREOS: River Falling LovE (Ajax)

Wreck Small Speakers were a New Zealand duo that created some of the most unique sounds to emanate from that musically fertile nation from 1983 to 1986. Generally, their songs exist in post-Velvet Underground damaged realm with large injections of avant-garde experimentalism that point toward the likes of John Cage. Pretty amazing stuff, made even more spacey and strung out given the drummerless line-up. Guitarists/keyboardists Michael Morley (currently in Dead C and Gate) and Richard Ram trade instruments to create some truly strange yet hauntingly beautiful music. This CD is actually a reissue, including the entire River Falling Love Flying Nun EP, a few tracks from their Xpressway tape, a track from the Xpressway Pile-up compilation and a couple previously unreleased things. Even though this stuff is almost ten years old, it sounds ten years ahead of its time. (Chris Crowson)
