WILLARD: "Sunshine Wire"/"Cypher" 7"
Matt
Willard
broke up in 1991, and some of its members went on to form Shiny Beast.
Thanks to The Matt Label (run by Matt Walter, the bassist for Small) of
Durham, this Raleigh quartet is gone but not forgotten. Willard is
considered to have been a major influence on Triangle rock as we know and
love it today and their sound is somewhat akin to that of Don Caballero
and various Richmond bands like Breadwinner and the Alter-Natives.
ÒSunshine Wire Ó is a driving rocker that could be a Swervedriver tune if
that band had a kick-ass bassist. "Cypher" is much edgier, with plenty of
start-stop action and nifty instrumental interplay. It's over much too
soon. (Jay Murray)
