Snoop, fresh from playing Dr. Dre's Flavor Flav and assorted ongoing legal troubles, has graduated into the big leagues with his own top-of-the-charts album. The music, courtesy of Dre, is incredibly funky, comparable in sound to a Parliament album or the Superfly soundtrack (both of which Doggystyle samples liberally). It's so good, in fact, that I'll bet Dre wishes he'd saved a few of these for his own album. Snoop's lyrics are another story. Sex, violence and getting high are all wonderful. But when every song is about lighting up a fatty and then beating up your ho after you've just banged her (if she's lucky), there's not much time for Snoop to talk about anything else. Sure, he's just doing it for the money, but I can't help wondering what his mom thinks. (Pat Anders)
