Real rhumba? Ostensibly rhumba is an exuberant, sweaty, sexual dance music. The music on this CD, on the other hand, is somewhat clinical, uninspired, archive-bound "world music." Listening to it is like watching a documentary - and not a very entertaining one. Rhumba is drums and vocals, the drums imitate the wooden boxes, glass bottles, spoons, and sticks rhumba was invented with; the vocals are narrative and used to deliver dance challenges. But without the dancers, this music falls flat. You can't put the sweat and dirt of the Cuban barrio on a CD, and what you get is flat, bored percussion monotony instead. (Floyd Utschig)
