A second Merge single for these local boys, the last two songs you'll hear with Mike Kenlan's guitar (now exclusively Small 23). The a-side kicks out a quick and lovely old-school sing-a-long you'd be pleased to swill a beer to; the flip, though a bit slower, does much the same. Those comparisons to Halo of Flies and New Bomb Turks aren't quite as applicable but I'd hesitate before heralding The Maturing Pipe. Anyway, it proves that this hardcore revival business is more than mere novelty. Long live the Pipes! (Franz Kunst)
