LOIS: Strumpet (K)

I like indie pop as much as the next gal but you gotta wonder if those K kids ever get out of the house. Beat Happening, Heavenly, Bratmobile - something must be stunting their growth. Unlike her fellow love rockers, Lois pulls off the cutesiness as an adult. Her whispery/non-confrontational voice carries itself confidently above the low-key guitar/drums (drumming is Bratmobile's Molly Neuman) and occasional bass backdrop. Strumpet, her second full-length (though a piddling 27 min.) is a noticeable improvement upon last year's solo debut (Lois used to be one-half of the duo Courtney Love). The songs, though not quite hummable, paint the pastoral pretty. Even off-key, Lois is a delight. (Carrie McLaren)
