Another weird release from the strange alliance between Mammoth and (Primus bassist) Les Claypool's label. Charlie Hunter is a defacto member of the Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy (guitar guy on the last tour, plays on the record, etc.) but calling this a trio is unfair since he's often the bass and guitar player. Whatever the details, Hunter's a great guitarist who follows jazz from the same place Stanley Jordon got his ideas, but with less fusion, less heroics, just solid old-school chops. This sound wanders between Wes Montgomery and (maybe) Stanley Clarke " friendly, groove-oriented jazz that comes from tradition. More than anything else it sounds like (Paisley Park artist) Madhouse with more of a jazz background and less funk/dance. The sax is smokey and phat, not too screamy. The drummer has a light touch, but high-density (i.e., lots of notes). Great release. (Bob Boster)
