Guided By Voices are one of America's best kept secret. They are from Dayton, Ohio and follow in the proud lineage of other Ohio bands like the Electric Eels, Styrenes, and Pere Ubu. But where the other bands created new sounds in response to the hackneyed music of the '60's and 70's, GBV are able to distill everything that was pure and good about commercial 60's British pop and 70's arena rock and breed it with enough 90's low-fidelity work ethic to make everyone happy. This CD is actually two albums - Vampire On Titus, which is their new album for Scat; and Propeller, their 1992 Rockatan LP. The songs on both of these albums represent some of the most wonderful tunes that have passed through my ears in a long while. But be forewarned, Vampire is much more lo-fi (in an early Sebadoh kind of way) and may be a bit too challenging at first. Propeller is better produced and more accessible, but after a few listens, it all sounds great. (Chris Crowson)
