STEVE COLEMAN and FIVE ELEMENTS: The Tao of Mad Phat (Fringe Zones)

More stuff from the master of the Brooklyn Jazz/Funk axis. This is probably the tenth or so release for Coleman (on his fourth or fifth label). While a subtle musicological analysis might be able to distinguish one from another, they all work pretty much the same, varying tempo of this shuffling broken funk groove with wailing saxes overtop. Although this sounds less than thrilling, the ensuing brand of jazz is both heady and physical; good for sharing with people who think jazz sucks. Occasionally, this is broken by intro/outro shadings. Coleman is expert at his little sub-genre and his solos kick, so try this out. Interesting that Greg Oby came out of this band to move into the hip-hop jazz thing, while Coleman's urban vernacular influence remains the funk. This one was recorded live in front of people in the studio. (Bob Boster)
